Writer’s Guidelines

The Horsemen’s Yankee Pedlar is a monthly general interest equine/equestrian publication focusing on the Northeast – specifically the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The magazine includes indvidual sections for a variety of breeds and disciplines, including: Color breeds, Arabian, dressage and eventing, driving, hunter/jumper, Morgan, Quarter Horse, Saddlebred and Hackney, saddle seat, trail, New England news, and general interest features.

Feature Articles

The Pedlar prefers people-related, informational, training, or how-to articles, but all ideas are given consideration. Most feature articles focus on ideas and people within the Northeast (i.e., Top Tips from New England Show Judges), but more general stories such as “Alternative Therapies for your Horse” are also accepted. To get a better understanding of the topics we cover, please take a look at some of our digital editions of the Pedlar. We do not accept poetry, fiction, or stories told from a first-person perspective. Feature articles are generally between 1,200 to 1,800 words, and should be typed, and submitted as a Word document. Please send queries, with a detailed outline of what you plan to write about, to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Event Writeups

News stories should include a synopsis of the competition or event (who, what, where, when, and why), results of major winners if applicable, and photos. For a small one-day show, 500 words is acceptable for the writer to highlight the action. For a larger show, 700 to 1,000 words is preferred. All submissions should be sent in a Word document.

Please give priority to important details of the competition while avoiding unnecessary filler information and repetition of results. For instance, if there was a close class and rider were called back for a ride-off, provide who they were and what they were asked to perform. If there was a particularly big winner throughout the show, an interview and some background information on that person would be interesting to readers. All queries for news stories can be submitted to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Photographs

The Pedlar accepts high resolution color photos (minimum 300 dpi, at least 4x6 inches) from amateur and professional photographers to accompany feature articles and news stories. Please check our editorial calendar for a list of features that the magazine runs throughout the year. If you’re sending in photos to accompany a news story and they are taken by a professional photographer, written permission must be obtained from the photographer and sent in along with the submission.

All photos should be clear, with non-busy backgrounds whenever possible. Try to get the best angle on your subject, and be sure that the rider is not making a funny face. Also, be sure that you never cut off the horse’s legs, hooves or head in a photo. All photography submissions can be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or can be mailed to Horsemen’s Yankee Pedlar, c/o Elisabeth Prouty Gilbride, 83 Leicester St., N. Oxford, MA 01537. U.S. Postal Service submissions should include a self addressed, stamp envelope, if you’d like them returned to you.

HYP Digital Magazine

HYP Digital Magazine accepts short feature stories and materials for its monthly columns that are generally between 300 to 500 words long. To get a better idea of the content included in the digital magazine, please take a look at HYP Digital Magazine. Submissions can be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Other Helpful Tips…

• The Horsemen’s Yankee Pedlar and HYP Digital Magazine both follow A.P. style.

• When writing news stories and feature articles, please do not abbreviate words and be sure to write in full sentences.

• Always read over your article (it is helpful to read to yourself out loud) before submitting it.

• Check to make sure you haven’t used the same word throughout your article.
